Do you ever wonder why you should train your dog? After all they are well-mannered. You have a nice big fenced backyard for them. You do all you can possibly do for your dog. So what if your dog doesn’t come running to you every time you call them.

Well let me tell you no matter how careful you are accidents happen.

Saturday evening after supper will be imbedded in my mind for a long time. That was when our two dobes ran away….

We live in the country so our dogs have quite a large area fenced for them. We even have a gate at the garage door that opens into the yard. It used to have a latch but somewhere along the way the latch was taken off.

We had some real strong winds on Saturday. After supper my husband let the dogs out into the yard. We usually go with them but we were both doing something so we didn’t. It might have been about 10 minutes and I just had a funny feeling. You know the one you get when it is too quiet.

My husband went to check on them and when I saw him running back to the house I knew something was wrong. The wind had blown the gate open and our two dobes were on the loose.

I quickly called one neighbour who in turn called the other neighbours to be on the look out.

My husband and I jumped into the vehicle and looked for about twenty minutes then he dropped me off home and continue to search while I did foot patrol. About ten minutes later he arrived back with both dogs none the worse for wear. He found them up on the main road, which can have a fair bit of traffic.

Thank goodness there are trained in the recall. As soon as he stopped and called them they came and jump into the vehicle.

So what do you think? Do you think a few minutes a day to train your dog is a waste of time. Do you think “My dog would never do that!”

Remember dogs act on instinct. They’re not thinking hey I got this great fenced yard, lots of food and water and lots of love. They saw an opportunity and their instinct kicked in. Yes your dog would have done the same thing under the same circumstances.

We are very thankful that we were so lucky this time.

Until next time
