Summer, the favourite month for dogs and their owners. Plenty of long warm days and evenings mean ideal walking conditions. For dog owners across the country there can be little better than a quick early morning walk with their pooch. The fresh air and exercise is good for your health and your dog will love you for accompanying him on his daily walk. But the summer months can also bring with them a number of health hazards that you need to be aware of.
Alfresco BBQ Parties
We all enjoy a summer BBQ. Whilst enjoying the outdoors many of us allow our dogs to roam free with us in the garden. But be aware that allowing your dog to be in the same space as a hot BBQ could spell disaster. The worst case scenario is that the dog does not even realize the barbecue is hot until it is too late. If your dog is lively and excitable it could easily crash into the BBQ, or trip you up. And remember, BBQ’d food does not make a healthy meals for a dog. Dogs don’t mind begging for more, so offering him one sausage will only mean he expects another. This type of human food offer no nutritional value and will lead to your dog continuously asking for food from your plate. Instead, offer him a tasty bowl of his favourite dog food. Plus, your dog could end up choking on small bones if you offer it chicken wings or drumsticks.
Provide lots of water
Water is an essential part of your dog’s daily nutritional routine. It becomes even more important when the outside temperature rises. When at home you should always supply a clean bowl full of fresh water. If out with the dog remember to take some water and a bowl with you so whenever your dog appears thirsty you can offer him a drink. He will benefit from regular drinks and will certainly be thankful that you are quenching his thirst!
The dangers of keeping a Dog locked in a Hot Car
Do not be tempted to leave your dog in a locked car for more than a few minutes, especially during summer. Just remember that cars can quickly become very hot inside when parked in direct sunlight. This can make the dog dehydrate and in the worst case scenario could cause death.
Sun Screen
Like us, dogs can be negatively affected by the sun. You can protect your dog with pet friendly sun screen (don’t be tempted to use human sun screen). The areas with a thin coat of fur can be easily affected, so pay attention to the ears and nose. You can buy pet friendly sunscreen from your vet or local pet retailer.
