Raw Diets – Are they for your dog?

August 8th, 2007 · No Comments · Health

Today I would like to talk about a health concern concerning what you feed your dog.

I had a very disturbing email from a fella I used to work with. His family got there first dog ever a few months ago.  He sent me pictures and this dog was a cutie.

A few days ago he emailed me to tell me that their 7 month old puppy had died.  Apparently they were doing the raw food diet and wherever they were getting their food from the food was contaminated.

I have never done the raw food diet so I don’t know much about it. The premise for feeding your dog raw food is, that is what they ate in the wild and it is perfectly natural thing for them to do.

Many people agree with this.  I for one do not.

We have domesticated the dog for thousand of years now.  We don’t require them to go out and hunt for their food.

If it’s such a natural thing for them why are there businesses set up to prepare the raw food for them?   Why not just take them out to a field and let them hunt for their own food.

If you don’t want to feed your dog commercial dog food then you can prepare their food yourself but I would suggest that you cook it thoroughly.

We have just recently had some scares related to commercial dog food and unfortunately some deaths did occur. However the commercial dog food industry I would think is much better monitored than the raw food.

Whatever you decide to feed your dog if he/she is showing any kind of illness take them to the vet immediately.

We as pet owners have a responsibility to our pets and their health.

Until Next time.
