Introducing a Second Pet Dog To The Home

May 8th, 2010 · No Comments · Pets

If you are a dog lover, you may feel that one dog is not enough. Before you take the leap and adopt a second dog there are a number of points you really must consider.

First, you may want to consider your dog’s nature. If your beloved pet is a bit of a bully and the new dog isn’t submissive, there are going to be some major battles before they sort out which dog is in charge. If you ignore the personalities of the dogs you are really setting yourself up for an unhappy pairing between the animals. If your dog is very submissive, you may also have problems, as the new dog could bully your first dog and make his life miserable. The ideal situation would be to have two dogs with a similar, placid nature that is neither dominating nor submissive.

Next, you should consider your current dog’s size.Try and adopt a second dog with a similar breed to the dog already living with you. A large dog can easily hurt a small dog. If your dog is one of the larger breeds then you should only ever add a smaller dog to the home if you are certain that your dog has a gentle nature.

You then need to consider gender. Two females not spayed are unlikely to get on with each other. You really need to think about spaying your female dog before you add another female to the mix. After spaying a female can still be aggressive to another female so a male puppy may be a better choice.(Of course, you will have to alter at least one of your dogs unless you want to suddenly be the proud owner of 6 or 8 dogs.)

Age is another consideration and if you have a old dog adopting a puppy might not be a good idea. An older dog will have far less patience and energy and may not want to interact with a puppy. If your dog is old then you should strongly consider adopting a young adult dog.

Breed is your next consideration because whilst some dog breeds do get on others certainly do not. Some of the toy breeds become a bit spoiled and jealous of other dogs. If you have a pampered Yorkshire Terrier or Miniature Pinscher, you may find that introducing the new puppy can be a bit of a challenge. Larger and more notoriously aggressive dogs like pit bulls or rottweilers may not mix well at all and if your dog shows signs of occasional aggression it may be advisable to stick with just one. However, each dog is an individual and some dogs who are members of these breeds have no problem accepting a new puppy.

Lastly, think about whether you can actually afford a second dog. You will need to find money to pay for dog food, vets bills, accessories and more.

A Guide To Feeding Your New Pet Dog

May 7th, 2010 · No Comments · Health, Pets

As a nation of dog lovers we all want what’s best for our pet, but how much do we truly understand about our four legged friend’s nutritional requirements?

One of the most important elements of dog food is protein. A healthy, mature dog needs around 18% protein in its daily diet and this level increases for puppies and reproducing dogs. Fat is important, with a healthy dog requiring about 5% fat in its daily feeding regime.A diet of 18% protein and 5% fat is ideal for mature dogs.Too much fat makes dogs, as well as people, eat less by making them feel fuller. If they eat less, and there are less of other essential nutrients like protein and vitamins and minerals, the dog will not get the nourishment it needs.

Commercial dog food is a popular option for many dog owners and it gives you control over what you are feeding to your dog. Always read the label as quality can vary. When possible buy a premium food from a trusted brand. If you mix commercial dog food with homemade food remember to keep your eye on the fat levels. But whether you’re feeding your dog commercial dog food, or home made dog food, there are a few things to keep in mind so you don’t end up with a fussy dog…

1. Dogs should be fed two small meals each day, no more. Feeding your dog too frequently when he is older can turn him appear like a fussy eater, when he is actually full.

2. Feeding time is a time to allow your dog some space. Once he is eating you should leave him. Don’t fuss over him or stand watching him as this may make him nervous or agitated. Your dog should be given some space when eating, so don’t let the kids crowd him or pet him during meals times – it is too distracting and can be distressing for the animal.

3. Do not pander to a fussy dog by throwing food away that he won’t eat. Give him a chance to try it and remember that if he misses one meal he won’t starve.

4. A varied diet is great but don’t be too quick to change the food if he won’t eat one meal. If your dog is appearing to be fussy at meal times have a quick check to make sure that there is nothing physically wrong with him.

Dog’s do not become fussy overnight, so if your dog suddenly refuses to eat you should take him to the vet to get checked over.

6. Just like humans, your dog will have his favourite food. If you have honestly tried to feed a variety of foods and have noticed that your dog loves one and hates another you should recognize this and feed him his favourites.

7. It is not kind to give your pet human junk food, no matter how much he begs. Avoid this at all costs.

Dog Training – Correct Heel Method

April 7th, 2010 · No Comments · Pets, Training Tips

When you feel that you have sufficient control of your dog while walking, usually within four days of his initial orientation to the leash, you are now ready to go to a higher level of control.  When it comes to Dog Training, there should be no “half-way action” accepted. In other words, it’s all or nothing from your dog. And a crooked sit must be considered as something less than your dog giving his full potential.

Give your dog the command to heel and begin walking, remembering to start out on your left foot, in a straight line. Make a few right-about turns as necessary to make sure that you have his full attention. Then, as you prepare to come to a stop, shorten your hold on the leash just a bit. As you stop, not after and not before, pull up the leash with your right hand and press gently on the dog’s rear as you say the command “Sit”!

As soon as he sits, praise him and give him a pat on the head. Remember, dogs learn by associating their actions with a pleasing or displeasing result.

You do not have to push down heavily on your dog’s rear. You need to simply press lightly to help guide him into the proper sit position. It is more the right hand pulling the leash upward than the amount of pressure on the dog’s rear that will place him easily and quickly in the proper sitting position. Putting heavy pressure on your dog’s rear may stimulate him to resist, which is an unwanted action.

Always follow a correct behavioral response by your dog with praise, even if you caused the behavioral response. Even though you are placing your dog in the sitting position, this should still be followed by warm praise.|In these learning steps, the less resistance you have, the better off it will be, both for you and your dog. Also keep in mind the importance of a positive attitude.

This will be the pattern throughout the course. You will show your dog what he needs to do and follow it with praise. After the learning process has taken place within the mind of the dog, then will you correct for disobedience.

Your training program at this stage should still be limited to fifteen minutes per day and consist only of the commands “Heel” and “Sit”. Give the command to heel, walk about ten feet, do a right turn, then come to a stop, placing the dog in the sitting position while giving the command to sit. Follow each sit-placing with warm praise.

You have spent one full week showing him exactly what sit means, and it only takes four days for the average house dog to learn the average thing. Now, it’s time to show your dog in Dog Obedience Training that he must do it for himself and that you will not be leading him by the hand all of the time.
